The Practice

Linearscape is an award-winning interdisciplinary design studio based out of New York City. Linearscape was founded by graduates of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and SCI-arc who worked in a diverse array of high-profile architectural and landscape design offices before founding Linearscape.

Linearscape engages in exploration, research and collaboration to arise at design solutions that are inspired by the fluidity of movement and the integration of landscape and context with building form, materials and systems. We are committed to work that is socially and environmentally responsible and actively participate in non-profit and research projects. At Linearscape we believe in the power of design, its impact on the built environment and its potential to serve the greater good.

We specialize in designing sustainable projects at all scales. We listen carefully and work closely with our clients to arrive at innovative design solutions that fulfill their needs. Our designs aim to meet project goals and budgets while creating inspiring spaces for both the building occupants and the neighboring community.

Awards and Publications

Linearscape was the recipient of a 2016 AIA Citation in Architecture, 2015 SARA Award for Design and Construction Excellence, and the Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Award in 2012. What is a Linearscape?

‘Linear’ centers around the notion that spaces should respond to the lines and flows of people, as in their direction, density, and speed of movement. ‘Scape’ is derived from the continuation of the landscape, as in the physical characteristics of the land, topography, site, and context. These influences converge and arise to generate a Linearscape, celebrating openness, transparency, and a connection between people and place.

Our work has an intimate connection with nature and emerges from a respect for the basic elements of land, water, vegetation, and topography. We believe that mutually beneficial relationships between communities and the built and natural environment lead the path towards a Linearscape, the design philosophy behind our work. It never stays the same, constantly evolving from place to place and time to time.

History

The genesis of our vision began with our award-winning project, Symbiopia, an imagined symbiotic waterfront community that combines a vertical hydroponic farming facility with a multifaceted urban landscape, that is interwoven between a web of existing infrastructure, to connect a low-income community to its waterfront. The project was the first to successfully address our interests in complex urban design issues such as equitable access to fresh food, sustainable economic development, waste management, and infrastructure in a design that fostered symbiotic relationships between the community, environment, and local economy. Through this project and subsequent projects such as Reimagining Rockaway and Manufacturing Gowanus, our pursuit of a Symbiotic Urbanism; synergetic urban infrastructures that merge the interests of communities, the environment, and public realm, evolved and continues to guide our practice. We are continuously exploring its possibilities and applications through design proposals, research projects, and multidisciplinary collaborations. Our commitment to design excellence and sustainable and equitable design has been demonstrated by multiple design awards and publications.
